The hospital was known throughout Latin America as the American Hospital at Chuquicamata. It was known as the best hospital in the hemisphere. Today there is no hospital for the families of the mineros. The Copper Hospital is only for the miners themselves. The Municipal Hospital that was being built to replace and move the services to Calama still sits half-constructed for the contractors that went bankrupt.
The world's largest mining town went from having the best hospital care in Latin America to none save for a few very under supplied under staffed clinics.
We hope to earn the respect of the Calamanians by having our Adopt Clean Copper campaign begin again this century, and first re-establish with the Calamanians, their Municipal Hospital.
